Why background sound helps many ADHD brains
A common experience with ADHD is that silence is not calm: every small noise, thought or notification competes for attention. A steady background sound can smooth that out. Researchers Göran Söderlund and colleagues proposed the moderate brain arousal model, which suggests that people with lower baseline arousal may perform better with some added noise, while people without ADHD may not benefit or may even do slightly worse.
The evidence fits that picture. Early studies found that white noise improved memory performance in inattentive children, and a 2024 meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry found a small but real benefit of white and pink noise on task performance for young people with ADHD symptoms, with no benefit for those without.
Why brown noise is the community favourite
Most research used white or pink noise, but people with ADHD overwhelmingly talk about brown noise. Its deep, steady rumble covers distractions without the hiss of white noise, and many describe it as the moment their inner chatter "goes quiet". It has barely been studied directly, so experiment: start with the ADHD Brown mix and compare it with pink or white noise over a few days.
A focus setup built for ADHD
- Make starting easy. One button starts the sound. One more starts a focus block. No account, no settings to fiddle with.
- See time passing. The large timer and progress bar make time visible, which helps with time blindness.
- Pick three tasks only. The Focus panel has space for your top three for today. Small, concrete tasks beat long lists.
- Park distractions. When a thought pops up, write it in the brain dump and return to the task.
- Try Flow mode. If timers that interrupt you feel stressful, Flowmodoro counts up instead and gives you a break proportional to the time you worked.
- Reset with breathing. Box breathing (four counts in, hold, out, hold) is built in for the moments you feel scattered.
A 25 minute starter routine
- Press play on the brown mix and set the volume so it is present but not loud.
- Write one task in the Focus panel: the very next physical step, not the whole project.
- Start the timer and work only on that step until the bell.
- Take the break away from the screen, then decide: another block, or stop for now.
Background noise is a focus aid, not an ADHD treatment. If attention problems affect your work, studies or relationships, talk to a doctor or psychologist about assessment and support.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best noise for ADHD?
Research mostly supports white and pink noise, with small benefits for people with ADHD symptoms. Many people with ADHD prefer brown noise because it is deeper and less harsh. Try each for a few sessions.
Why does brown noise calm ADHD brains?
One theory is that steady noise adds just enough stimulation to help an under-aroused brain focus. Brown noise also masks distracting sounds without a harsh hiss. It has not been studied much specifically.
Should children with ADHD listen to noise while studying?
Some studies found benefits for children with attention difficulties at moderate volumes. Keep the volume low and talk to their clinician about overall support.
Is it better to use music or noise for ADHD focus?
Music with lyrics often competes for attention. Steady noise or simple instrumental sound tends to be less distracting, but preferences vary.
