Why rain is so relaxing
Rain is the most popular relaxation sound in the world for good reasons. It is steady but never identical: thousands of drops create a rich, random texture with a spectrum close to pink noise, which our ears find soft and balanced. It carries no information to follow, unlike voices or music, so the mind can let go of it.
There may be a deeper reason too. A 2017 study in Scientific Reports found that listening to natural sounds, compared with artificial ones, was linked to more outward-directed attention and a shift towards the body's rest-and-digest state. And for many people rain simply means a reason to stay in, slow down and get cosy.
Real recordings, not a short loop
The rain here is a real field recording, played through the Web Audio API with a generated texture underneath. The live layer starts instantly when you press play and keeps the sound from revealing an obvious loop point, so you can leave it on for hours.
Rain mixes to try
- Rainy study: rain, a touch of brown noise and soft keyboard typing. Our most popular focus mix.
- Storm shelter: thunderstorm plus a crackling fireplace for a dramatic but cosy evening.
- Night train: rain against the window of a rumbling train carriage.
- Deep sleep: quiet rain over pink noise, with everything else switched off.
Every layer has its own volume slider in the Sounds panel, and the Rainy Study scene adds animated rain on the window.
Rain sounds for sleep and focus
For sleep, keep the volume low and add pink noise to smooth out gaps between drops. For focus, rain works well with a Pomodoro timer: start a 25 minute block and let the rain run through your breaks. If you notice yourself listening to the thunder rather than working, switch to steady rain only.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real rain recordings?
Yes. Rain, thunderstorm and the other nature sounds are real field recordings, layered with a live generated texture so playback starts instantly and does not loop audibly.
Why does rain help me sleep?
Rain is a steady, soft sound with no information to follow. It masks sudden noises and many people associate it with comfort and rest.
Can I add thunder to the rain?
Yes. Open Sounds and turn on Thunderstorm, or choose the Storm Shelter mix.
Is rain good for studying?
Many people find steady rain an ideal study background because it masks distractions without demanding attention. Pair it with the Pomodoro timer.
