What is white noise?
White noise contains every audible frequency at equal intensity per hertz, much like white light contains every colour. Because there are far more hertz in the high range than in the low range, our ears hear it as a bright, airy "shhh", similar to TV static, a fan or a hissing radio between stations.
That brightness is exactly what makes white noise so effective at masking. Human speech carries most of its intelligibility between roughly 500 Hz and 4,000 Hz, a range white noise covers well. When nearby voices blend into the hiss, your brain stops trying to follow them.
When white noise works best
- Open offices and shared spaces: it lowers the intelligibility of nearby conversations, which is the main cause of distraction at work.
- Light sleepers: steady sound reduces the jump between silence and sudden noises such as traffic, footsteps or a neighbour's door.
- Babies: a frequently cited 1990 study in Archives of Disease in Childhood found that 80% of newborns fell asleep within five minutes with white noise, compared with 25% without it.
- Studying in noisy places: cafés, dorms and libraries with whispering are easier to tune out.
White, pink or brown: which should you pick?
White noise is the strongest masker but also the most tiring for some ears. If you find it sharp after an hour, move down the spectrum:
| Noise | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| White | Bright, hissy | Covering speech, offices, babies |
| Pink | Balanced, like rain | Sleep, reading, all-round use |
| Brown | Deep, rumbling | Long focus sessions, ADHD, relaxation |
| Grey | Perceptually flat | People who find white noise uneven |
You can also blend them. A little white noise under brown noise keeps the warmth while adding extra speech masking.
Using white noise safely
Keep the level moderate: if you have to raise your voice to talk over it, it is too loud. For infants, a 2014 study in Pediatrics found that some sleep machines can exceed 85 dB at maximum volume, so place any sound source well away from the crib and keep the volume low. For adults, a speaker across the room is gentler on your ears than earbuds.
White noise is generated live in your browser here, so it never loops and you can leave it running as long as you like. Combine it with the Pomodoro timer for structured work, or set a scene and dim the screen for sleep.
Frequently asked questions
Is white noise good for sleep?
For many people, yes. It masks sudden sounds that would otherwise wake you. Keep the volume low and try pink or brown noise if white noise feels too bright.
Is white noise safe for babies?
It can help babies settle, but keep the volume low and the sound source well away from the crib. Some infant sleep machines have been measured above 85 dB at full volume.
Does white noise help you concentrate?
It helps most when the distraction is speech or unpredictable noise. In a quiet room it adds little, and some people prefer the softer sound of pink or brown noise.
Can white noise damage hearing?
Only if it is too loud for too long. Keep it well below conversation level and take breaks.
