What are delta waves?

Delta waves are the slowest brain rhythms, between about 0.5 and 4 Hz. They dominate the deepest stage of sleep, known as N3 or slow-wave sleep. This is the stage linked to physical recovery, the release of growth hormone and the consolidation of memories. Most slow-wave sleep happens in the first half of the night, and the amount naturally decreases with age.

Can sound deepen sleep?

Sleep researchers have shown that sound can influence slow waves under specific conditions. In closed-loop stimulation studies, short bursts of pink noise played exactly in time with a sleeper's own slow waves, tracked live by EEG, made those waves stronger and improved memory the next day.

A delta binaural beat from a phone is a different thing: it is not synchronised with your brain, and there is little evidence that it produces more deep sleep. Where it can help is in the hour before bed. A slow, quiet pulse is a calming signal to stop scrolling and start winding down, and many people find it easier to fall asleep with a steady sound than in silence.

How to use delta beats at night

  1. Start 20 to 30 minutes before sleep with the volume just audible.
  2. Use comfortable headphones or sleep headphones; binaural beats need one tone per ear.
  3. Add a soft layer such as rain, a fireplace or pink noise so the sound stays pleasant if you remove the headphones.
  4. Let it stop on its own. The Sleep Descent session glides from relaxed alpha down into delta over 45 minutes and then ends.

Dim the scene and lower the screen brightness, or switch on Desk mode and turn the phone face down.

Better sleep basics still matter most

No frequency replaces the fundamentals: a regular sleep schedule, a cool and dark room, limited caffeine after midday and less bright screen time late at night. If you regularly struggle to fall or stay asleep, talk to a doctor; cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has strong evidence behind it.

Keep the volume low and avoid pulsing audio if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder.

Frequently asked questions

Do delta waves help you sleep?

Delta waves are what your brain produces in deep sleep. Listening to a delta beat does not guarantee deeper sleep, but a slow, quiet sound can help you relax and fall asleep.

Is it safe to sleep with binaural beats?

At a low volume, generally yes. Use comfortable headphones, and consider a session that ends automatically so you are not listening all night.

What is the best frequency for sleep?

Delta (0.5–4 Hz) is the band of deep sleep. Many people start in theta or alpha and let a session glide down into delta.
