What is brown noise?

Brown noise is a random signal whose energy drops steadily as the pitch rises, by about 6 dB for every octave. The result is a deep, soft rumble with almost no hiss: think of a distant waterfall, heavy surf heard from indoors or the cabin of a long-haul flight. It is also called red noise or Brownian noise. The name comes from the botanist Robert Brown and the random "Brownian motion" the signal imitates, not from the colour.

Because most of its energy sits in the low frequencies, brown noise feels warmer and less tiring than white noise. That is why so many people leave it running for hours while they work, read or fall asleep.

Brown noise vs. white and pink noise

NoiseHow it soundsEnergy per octaveOften used for
BrownDeep rumble, waterfallFalls 6 dB per octaveFocus, ADHD, sleep, relaxation
PinkSteady rain, balancedFalls 3 dB per octave (equal per octave)Sleep, reading, general masking
WhiteBright hiss, TV staticRises 3 dB per octave (flat per Hz)Blocking voices, babies, offices

If white noise feels harsh, try pink. If pink still feels too bright, brown is the natural next step. Our Deep Brown variant goes even lower for people who want a pure, velvety rumble.

Why people use brown noise

Focus and deep work

A steady background sound hides unpredictable noises such as conversations, notifications or traffic, which are what really pull attention away. Brown noise does this without the high-frequency hiss that some people find fatiguing over long sessions.

ADHD

Brown noise became popular in ADHD communities, where many people describe it as "quieting" a busy mind. Research has mostly tested white and pink noise: a 2024 meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry found a small benefit of background noise on task performance for young people with ADHD symptoms, but not for those without. Brown noise itself has barely been studied, so treat it as a low-risk tool to test on yourself, not a treatment.

Sleep

Continuous sound reduces the contrast between silence and sudden noises, so a door slam or a passing car is less likely to wake you. Brown noise is a popular choice for sleep because its low tone is less intrusive than white noise.

How to use this free brown noise generator online

  1. Press play and set the master volume low. You should be able to hold a conversation over it.
  2. Open Sounds to switch between Brown and Deep Brown, or layer rain, fire or a stream on top.
  3. Start a focus block with the timer. The noise keeps running through breaks unless you stop it.
  4. Use Desk mode on a phone or tablet to keep the screen awake for long sessions.

The noise is generated live with the Web Audio API, so there is no audio file to download, no loop point to notice and nothing to buffer.

Is it safe to listen to brown noise all day?

For most people, yes, as long as the volume is moderate. Hearing damage depends on loudness and duration: occupational guidelines treat around 85 dB for eight hours as the limit, and background noise for focus should sit far below that. Take breaks, avoid turning it up to drown out a loud room, and if you use it for sleep, keep it quiet and away from your ears.

Frequently asked questions

Is brown noise better than white noise?

Neither is better in general. Brown noise is deeper and softer, so many people find it more comfortable for long sessions and sleep. White noise is brighter and better at covering high-pitched sounds such as voices.

Does brown noise help with ADHD?

Many people with ADHD say it helps them focus, and studies on white and pink noise show small benefits for some people with ADHD symptoms. Brown noise specifically has hardly been researched, so try it and keep it only if it works for you.

Can I sleep with brown noise on all night?

Yes, at a low volume. Keep the level quiet, use a speaker rather than earbuds if possible, and use the timer if you prefer the sound to stop after you fall asleep.

What is the difference between brown and deep brown noise?

Deep Brown is filtered further so almost all of the energy sits below about 250 Hz. It sounds like a distant, steady rumble with no hiss at all.

Does the brown noise loop?

No. It is generated continuously in your browser, so there is no repeating loop or audible seam.
